From hardware to software

So over the past few posts, I have discussed a couple of instruments from my hardware setup. Apart from the 2 tracks on the Dream Reset demo, all music you can find on this site was made by using hardware machines.

I like hardware a lot: the enjoyment of discovering a new instrument's sounds and possibilities, playing around with filters, effects, etc. I also like that each instrument comes with its own distinct limitations, which forces you to make decisions within the field of possibilities which you do have.

After the UNREQ EP in 2009, I could not get myself to making completed tracks anymore. I did still want to, but I started travelling and having different hobbies and interests, so time became more limited for music making. And it is a time consuming hobby, so what started as a temporary stop actually became a full stop.

I did become interested in software music making though, so at some stage I bought myself a copy of Ableton Live 8 and played around with that. But the time issue was still there, so for years I would have patches of time that I made some stuff with it, but never finished tracks.

I did like the sheer endless possibilities the software had to offer though. It was fun fooling around with it. In 2015, I made 2 finished tracks with it during a short period in which I had time for it, just before starting my web development education actually. I wanted to make 2 more to make it a 4 track EP, but since I never came around to that, I released the 2 tracks eventually in 2016. I like these tracks, it was fun making them and I hope to return to making music with Ableton at some stage in my life again...
