Top Gear #5: Roland VS2000-CD

Alright, for our fifth and final post in my "Top Gear" series discussing the gear which I used to produce the music on this site, let's talk about the Roland VS2000-CD. Not as much an instrument, but a recorder. A 16-track recorder to be precise, with onboard effects, advanced connectivity and a built-in CD drive which allowed me to put my music straight on a disc without having to transfer it to a laptop anymore. Which meant a great improvement in sound quality!

This device had such an impact on my recordings, that I can't forget to mention it in this series. As I mentioned, it vastly improved the sound of my recordings by eliminating the need to get the audio to a laptop for recording, but also by offering 16 tracks for recording and mixing, an enormous step from my 4 tracks previously. All music from PreFab onwards, with the exception of Dream Reset as these tracks were recorded with software, have been recorded on the VS2000-CD.

It also allowed for connecting a monitor and a mouse, which I did. This made it much easier to work with. Don't get me wrong, it was not as fluent as computers nowadays, but it sure was a hell of a lot easier than having to use knobs and buttons all the time.

With the emergence of software recording and better laptops, the need for these recording devices in a home setting does not exist anymore these days, but when I was recording my music it was a superb addition to the home studio setup and it was a joy to work with.
